A variety of different production features have helped the company throughout its history. Lego has been able to create some of the most well-known toys in the world due to these features. In the 1960s, the company continued to expand why play with lego rapidly. A major shift occurred when Godtfred Kirk’s cousin, Dagny Holm, joined the company as a modelbuilder. Dagny was an expert in creating large-scale models and globes, which were displayed in the showroom. This was a great way to showcase the potential of LEGO bricks, and to spark interest among youngsters.

In 1971 the LEGO system expanded into new areas thanks to the additions of furniture and dollhouses. The LEGO system further grew in 1972 with the introduction of ship and boat sets that had hull pieces floating. In the 1960s, the company began its international expansion by selling in North America via a licensing agreement with Samsonite.

In the 1980s, the company continued to grow, diversify and modernize. The company also established a research and design department, which worked to keep the LEGO System at the forefront of innovation. The introduction of themed sets allowed users to build specific models, without needing to work out the details on their own. This was the first step to more intricate building and gave children an experience that was more hands-on with Legos.
